Memories of enjoying Kairi panha (raw mango drink) at my place and other neighbors in society during the Chaitra gauri haldi kunku in summer vacations are still fresh in my mind.
It is believed that Goddess Parvati visits her maternal home and stays for a month. Hence ladies of the house worship Chaitra Gauri (Chaitra is the first month of Hindu calendar). The menu for this haldi kunku used to be Raw mango drink and raw mango daal.
I have faint memories of my grandmother, but her recipes are a hit in our family. I would like to share her super traditional family recipe of raw mango drink which she used to prepare and passed on to my mother. Not many know this variation or rather haven’t heard of it anywhere else. It is made using chilled milk. You can call it a Raw mango milkshake. So, let us take a look at the recipe for this lip smacking, soul filling, Raw Mango Milkshake!
This drink makes an excellent cooler in the sweltering hot summers in India.
Raw Mango Milkshake (Dudh Panha)
1 Big Raw Mango
2 Tbsp Sugar
2 Glasses of milk
1 Tsp Cardamom Powder
Few strands of Saffron (Kesar)
- Boil the raw mango till it becomes soft. Peel and separate the mango pulp from the seed. Add sugar and cardamom powder. Mix well. Keep it in the refrigerator to cool.
- Boil two glasses of milk till it is reduced to one and a half glass. Cool it down and refrigerate.
- Now blend one tbsp of mango pulp concentrate with the chilled milk, some powdered sugar, few strands of saffron and 3-4 ice cubes in a blender.
- Voila!! Your Raw Mango Milkshake (Dudh Panha) is ready to serve.
Garnish it with 2-3 strands of kesar.
Note: The milk has to be chilled else it will spoil.
