In the current pandemic situation, we all are worried about immunity. Ayurveda is one of the ancient sciences which helps us to improve our immunity. Ayurveda, India’s ancient medicinal practice, is a preventive as well as curative science. As we know Covid-19 is a respiratory disorder and respiratory system starts from our nose, so we have to strengthen our nasal passage.

I would advice ‘Nasya’, an ayurvedic Panchkarma procedure, as one of the preventive measure!

What is Nasya?

Nasya is one of the Panchakarma Therapy which means administration of drugs (Medicated Oil, Ghee, Decoction etc.) by the route of nasal cavity. It is one of the detoxifying procedure.

Nasya panchakarma are of two types – Marsha Nasya and Pratimarsha Nasya.

Marsh Nasya should be done under the supervision of the Doctor, while Pratimarsha Nasya can be done at home.

How to perform Nasya?

Pratimarsha Nasya  (at home):

Lie down on your back. Take a small pillow below your shoulder so that your head gets tilted back. Put 2 drops of lukewarm Ayurvedic Nasya Oil in each nostril. Wait for 2 minutes in same position and then gargle with lukewarm water.

Using your little finger, apply sesame oil /coconut oil or cow ghee in both the nostrils every morning and evening on a regular basis. This is also suggested by Ministry of AYUSH, India, to improve the immunity.

What are the Benefits of Nasya ?

If you practice nasya regularly, it helps to improve the respiratory immunity. It is said in Ayurveda, ‘Nasa hi shiraso dwaram’, which means, nose is the main doorway or gateway of the head or cranial cavity and in turn to our consciousness. It has a similar impact on our Nervous System too. Nasya helps to maintain the bilipid layer of the nose which helps to trap bacteria and viruses. It helps to increase the ciliary beating.

Nasya is very useful in treating different diseases such as Sinusitis, Headache, Cervical spondylitis, Insomnia, Disorders of Eyes, Ears, Nose, Throat, Hair etc. Different medicated oils are used to treat different disorders

Nasya should never be administered immediately after a bath and having food. It is also not advisable during pregnancy.

*It is advisable to consult Ayurvedic Doctor before doing Nasya to avoid complications.
